In the fall of 1989, Gradient 1.2 was replaced by the 1.3 model, which had been under development for some time. The new Gradient 1.3 stood out from its predecessors with its rounded look. Jorma Salmi, who was responsible for the design of the speaker, had invited his friend Jukka Vaajakallio to take part in the development work. Industrial designer Jukka Vaajakallio had just completed the industrial design of the Avanti speaker for Gradient.
The speaker was honoured with many design awards and has been in collections of museums of industrial art in Helsinki and Tokyo. It has been displayed internationally in the collections of Finnish Industrial Design.
Gradient 1.3 was also Gradient’s first export model. It received great reviews globally in magazines like The Absolute Sound and was featured on the cover of Stereo Review´s Buyers’ Guide in 1992.
