Our slogan when marketing the first Gradient 1.0 speakers in the 1980s was: 'Sounds great in any room.' We had created a speaker that delivered exceptional sound quality in all types of spaces. The same design philosophy has guided Gradient’s product development to this day. We create speakers for homes, where acoustics are often challenging.

The spirit of the original Series One, combined with the innovations we have developed over the decades, makes the Gradient 1.4 a truly unique loudspeaker.

The design of the Gradient 1.4 is truly unique—its form is dictated by acoustics and function. The speaker consists of a spherical upper section, an ideal shape for a cabinet, and a separate bass unit. The upper section can be tilted to minimise room-induced colouration, ensuring optimal performance in any space. The combination of this ideal form and carefully engineered construction results in exceptional stiffness and rigidity, effectively eliminating cabinet vibrations.

Gradient 1.4 embodies pure functionalism—every aspect of its design serves a purpose. Nothing is superfluous, nothing is missing. Sculpted to perfection.

Acoustic Resistance Enclosure

Gradient’s Acoustic Resistance Enclosure shapes sound radiation into a cardioid pattern, directing more sound forward while reducing unwanted reflections from walls and furniture.

By allowing controlled airflow, the enclosure prevents internal pressure buildup, enabling the driver to move freely—just as it would without a cabinet. This minimizes resonances and ensures a pure, natural sound with exceptional clarity and consistency in any room.

Coaxial Point Source

At the heart of Gradient loudspeakers is our advanced coaxial driver technology, manufactured exclusively for Gradient in Norway. By placing the tweeter at the centre of the midrange cone, we create a single point source where all frequencies originate from the same location. This design ensures seamless sound reproduction, delivering an incredibly precise and natural listening experience with a three-dimensional soundstage.

Controlled Floor Reflection

Of all room reflections, the floor is often the most problematic for bass reproduction. In traditional speaker designs, floor reflections interfere with the direct sound, causing uneven bass response and unwanted colouration.

In the Gradient 1.4, the bass driver is positioned facing the floor, ensuring that the direct sound and its reflection reach the listener simultaneously. This results in a cleaner and more accurate bass response. Additionally, the natural reinforcement from the floor enhances the bass output without distortion.

Flat Energy Response

A loudspeaker doesn’t just project sound forward—it radiates in multiple directions, interacting with the room’s surfaces. If the overall energy response is uneven, it creates an unnatural, coloured sound.

Gradient’s Flat Energy Response ensures a smooth frequency balance in all directions, not just at the listening position. This results in a natural, consistent sound that remains true to the original recording, regardless of the room acoustics.
